Psalm 148 in Hebrew and English, and the words as they are sung.

1

Praise Yah! Praise Yahweh from the heavens! Praise him in the heights!

הַ֥לְלוּ יָ֨הּ ׀ הַֽלְל֣וּ אֶת־יְ֭הוָה מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֑יִם הַֽ֝לְל֗וּהוּ בַּמְּרוֹמִֽים׃

2

Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his army!

הַֽלְל֥וּהוּ כָל־מַלְאָכָ֑יו הַֽ֝לְל֗וּהוּ כָּל־צבאו׃

3

Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you shining stars!

הַֽ֭לְלוּהוּ שֶׁ֣מֶשׁ וְיָרֵ֑חַ הַ֝לְל֗וּהוּ כָּל־כּ֥וֹכְבֵי אֽוֹר׃

4

Praise him, you heavens of heavens, you waters that are above the heavens.

הַֽ֭לְלוּהוּ שְׁמֵ֣י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְ֝הַמַּ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר ׀ מֵעַ֬ל הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

5

Let them praise Yahweh’s name, for he commanded, and they were created.

יְֽ֭הַֽלְלוּ אֶת־שֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֤י ה֭וּא צִוָּ֣ה וְנִבְרָֽאוּ׃

6

He has also established them forever and ever. He has made a decree which will not pass away.

וַיַּעֲמִידֵ֣ם לָעַ֣ד לְעוֹלָ֑ם חָק־נָ֝תַ֗ן וְלֹ֣א יַעֲבֽוֹר׃

7

Praise Yahweh from the earth, you great sea creatures, and all depths,

הַֽלְל֣וּ אֶת־יְ֭הוָה מִן־הָאָ֑רֶץ תַּ֝נִּינִ֗ים וְכָל־תְּהֹמֽוֹת׃

8

lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind, fulfilling his word,

אֵ֣שׁ וּ֭בָרָד שֶׁ֣לֶג וְקִיט֑וֹר ר֥וּחַ סְ֝עָרָ֗ה עֹשָׂ֥ה דְבָרֽוֹ׃

9

mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,

הֶהָרִ֥ים וְכָל־גְּבָע֑וֹת עֵ֥ץ פְּ֝רִ֗י וְכָל־אֲרָזִֽים׃

10

wild animals and all livestock, small creatures and flying birds,

הַֽחַיָּ֥ה וְכָל־בְּהֵמָ֑ה רֶ֝֗מֶשׂ וְצִפּ֥וֹר כָּנָֽף׃

11

kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth,

מַלְכֵי־אֶ֭רֶץ וְכָל־לְאֻמִּ֑ים שָׂ֝רִ֗ים וְכָל־שֹׁ֥פְטֵי אָֽרֶץ׃

12

both young men and maidens, old men and children.

בַּחוּרִ֥ים וְגַם־בְּתוּל֑וֹת זְ֝קֵנִ֗ים עִם־נְעָרִֽים׃

13

Let them praise Yahweh’s name, for his name alone is exalted. His glory is above the earth and the heavens.

יְהַלְל֤וּ ׀ אֶת־שֵׁ֬ם יְהוָ֗ה כִּֽי־נִשְׂגָּ֣ב שְׁמ֣וֹ לְבַדּ֑וֹ ה֝וֹד֗וֹ עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ וְשָׁמָֽיִם׃

14

He has lifted up the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints, even of the children of Israel, a people near to him. Praise Yah!

וַיָּ֤רֶם קֶ֨רֶן ׀ לְעַמּ֡וֹ תְּהִלָּ֤ה לְֽכָל־חֲסִידָ֗יו לִבְנֵ֣י יִ֭שְׂרָאֵל עַֽם־קְרֹב֗וֹ הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃

Hallelujah

sing it out from the sky

Up where the heights are

let Him hear it from you

All you messengers of His

every army camped among the stars

Sun and moon, lift Him up

every point of light that burns

Sky above the sky

and the waters stacked beyond the clouds

Let them shout the name of the LORD

He spoke and there they were

He set them in their places for good

drew a line they'll never cross

Now from the ground

send it up to Him

Great beasts of the sea

down where the dark water runs

Lightning and hail

snow and the smoke of the cold

Storm wind on the move

doing only what He says

Mountains and every hill

fruit trees and the tall cedars

Wild things and the herds

the crawling things and every wing

Kings of the earth and all their nations

captains and the ones who judge

Young men and young women

the gray heads with the young

Let them shout the name of the LORD

His name alone stands high

His glory covers the ground

and runs across the sky

He lifted up a horn for His people

a song for all His faithful ones

for the sons of Israel

the people He keeps close

Let them shout the name of the LORD

His name alone stands high

Hallelujah

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

These songs are not a word-for-word translation of the Psalms. They were never meant to be. Nor do they try to capture every idea in every psalm. In a song, that would be impossible.

What we have done is capture the essence of each psalm: what matters most in it. Think of each song as a summary. Think of it as a cheat sheet. The purpose of the psalm is still being met. God's word to mankind is still being heard.

Behind many of these lines is word research: deep study of the meaning of the Hebrew. So where a line sounds different from your translation, and you think it is wrong, study it. We believe you will find that the essence of what we sing is true.

The truth is that no one can set the Psalms to music without also becoming a commentator. That is what this is. It is a modern commentary on the Psalms: not only the Psalms themselves, and not only the Psalms being sung. So do not think that every word of the psalm is here. It is not. Read the psalm itself, in full.

Why do this at all? Because we believe God intended humanity to be surrounded by His word. This was always the entertainment He wanted us to have: not hours of television, not a day lost in a phone looking at nonsense. The blessed man of Psalm 1 meditates on God's word day and night. How can we meditate on His word if we do not surround ourselves with it?

As ministers, our first responsibility is to share God's word with people. That is what these songs are for.
