The words as they are sung, and James 3 itself: Paul Whitehorn's translation beside the Greek.

Verse 1

Not many of you

should become teachers, my brothers

because you know

that we who teach

will be judged more strictly

We all stumble

in many ways

Verse 2

If anyone never stumbles

in what he says

he is a perfect man

able to keep his whole body

in check as well

We put bits in horses' mouths

to make them obey us

and with them

we turn the whole animal

Or look at ships

they are so large

and are driven by strong winds

yet they are steered

by a very small rudder

wherever the pilot wants to go

Pre-Chorus

In the same way

the tongue is a small part of the body

but it boasts of great things

Think how great a forest

is set on fire

by a small spark

Chorus

The tongue is a fire

a small spark

and a great forest burns

no one can tame it

Verse 3

And the tongue is a fire

The tongue is a world of evil

set among the parts of our body

It stains the whole body

sets the whole course of life on fire

and is itself set on fire

by hell

Every kind of animal, bird

reptile and sea creature

can be tamed

and has been tamed

Bridge

Who among you is wise and understanding

Let him show it

by his good way of life

by deeds done in the humility

that comes from wisdom

But if you have bitter jealousy

and selfish ambition in your hearts

do not boast about it

and do not lie against the truth

That kind of wisdom

does not come down from above

It is earthly, unspiritual

and demonic

For where there is jealousy

and selfish ambition

there you will find disorder

and every evil practice

Final Chorus

The wisdom from above

is first of all pure

then peace-loving, gentle

willing to yield

full of mercy and good fruit

impartial and sincere

And the harvest of righteousness

is sown in peace

by those who make peace

by those who make peace

Outro

sown in peace

sown in peace

Left out of this song

James 3:8 (only partly sung)

But the tongue no one can tame. It is an evil that never rests, full of poison that kills.

James 3:9

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with the same tongue we curse human beings, who were made like God.

James 3:10

Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers, it should not be like this.

James 3:11

Does a spring pour out fresh and bitter water from the same opening?

James 3:12

My brothers, can a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable summary of James 3, as sung on this recording.

1

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Μὴnot πολλοὶmuch, great; here 'better, greater' διδάσκαλοιa teacher γίνεσθε,to come to be, be made ἀδελφοίa brother μου,I εἰδότεςI know, remember ὅτιthat μεῖζονlarge, great κρίμαa judgment, verdict, lawsuit λημψόμεθα·I receive, take

We all stumble in many ways. If anyone never stumbles in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check as well.

Or look at ships. They are so large and are driven by strong winds, yet they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Think how great a forest is set on fire by a small spark!

And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is a world of evil set among the parts of our body. It stains the whole body, sets the whole course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show it by his good way of life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

Each song is a dynamic equivalent of its chapter, made to help you memorize what is generally there. These are broad summaries. They are not a perfect preservation of everything in James, and they do not try to be.

We have worked hard to stay faithful to the original. Where we knowingly left something out for the music, we note it under each song. We believe in God’s perfect word, and we ask His mercy wherever we have fallen short. We made these songs to surround ourselves with as much of His word as we can.

Read the chapter itself to receive the full meaning of God’s word.
